The city of Puebla is a place full of culture, charm, traditions, history, and beliefs… The magnificent trace of the city has made up the legend that angels built it. Puebla is a jewel of the world’s architecture and has been able to adapt spaces and fill them with life and movement. The city is well-stocked with modern and comfortable hotels, beautiful colonial buildings, and interesting museums. After the conquest, the City of Puebla was the first to be founded in the state, on April 16th of 1531, as a social and human experiment, in which a group of civilians headed by Fray Toribio de Benavente participated. The majestic City of Puebla and other important cities were built with the labor and art of the Indians of the area, as well as that of enterprising Spaniards. Therefore, the area thrived with agriculture and cattle raising. In what architecture concerns, churches, schools, hospitals, and homes were built, and it is here where cultural syncretism left one of its most important legacies; in the historical center of the City of Puebla which was declared “Cultural Heritage of Mankind” by the UNESCO in 1987, with more than 2600 buildings of great value. Biblioteca Palafoxiana Located on the top floor of the College of San Juan, and today is the House of Culture. The cloister area contains frescos with scenes from the life of Francis of Assisi, along with portraits of a number of Franciscan friars. It has three chapels, one of them is “Capilla Real” (Royal Chapel) with 49 domes, its construction and shape represent the Arabian mosques. Iglesia de los Remedios in front of the Popocatépetl The church was built on the pyramid in 1594 as a symbol of the evangelization of the Spaniards over native polytheism. The hill remains verdant on the front side, and on the other side, archeologists have excavated the pyramid’s stairways, sacrificial altars, and five miles of tunnels that are open to visitors. After a large earthquake, it was rebuilt between 1864 and 1874. Though it’s up seemingly endless steps, the hike to the top of the hill is worth the effort. The panoramic view of Cholula, Puebla, and surrounding volcanoes is breathtaking, especially if you arrive early. Cholula Main Plaza This is an important meeting point in Cholula with a nice fountain of San Miguel Arcángel, donated in 1554 by King Felipe II of Spain. It is framed by the Ex Convento de San Gabriel and the city hall fronted by a line of businesses and restaurants, which in turn are fronted by a 170 meters gallery, marked by 46 arches supported by columns, known as the Guerrero Portal, an ideal place to enjoy the atmosphere and good cuisine of Cholula. Africam Safari Puebla has the most important zoo in Latin America where there is a great variety of wild animals, as well as a great number of endemic species, and there are also some endangered species. In this spectacular zoo, the animals live free like in their natural habitat. The zoo extends to 30 ha. at the bank of Valsequillo Lake and it is one of the largest in Mexico. This amazing zoo and wild animal park is home to more than 3,500 animals from 300 different species. The park is divided into regions that house wildlife from Asia, Africa, and North America. Estrella de Puebla (“Star of Puebla”) is a touristic Ferris wheel located in Puebla. It was opened on July 22, 2013, by governor Rafael Moreno Valle Rosas. The wheel received the Guinness Record for the world’s largest portable observation wheel, with a diameter of 69.8 meters and a height of 80 meters. The Estrella de Puebla is part of a touristic complex that includes the Parque Lineal, Jardín del Arte, Ecoparque Metropolitano, Paseo del Río Atoyac, as well as the International Museum of the Baroque. Governor Miguel Barbosa Huerta stated that the idea of retiring the Estrella de Puebla has not been dismissed, as it is “Moreno Valle’s insignia of waste”. However, local media has demonstrated that the attraction is economically self-sustaining. In January 2013, it was announced that governor Rafael Moreno Valle was evaluating the possibility of installing an observation wheel in Puebla, as part of the celebrations for the 151st-year anniversary of the Battle of Puebla. Later that month, it was confirmed that the government acquired an R80XL Ferris wheel from the German company Maurer German Wheels GmbH at the price of 200 million Mexican pesos. The original project consisted of the installation of the wheel at the Paseo Bravo historical zone, but it was opposed by INAH scholars and researchers. The project was moved to the Centro Escolar Niños Héroes de Chapultepec (CENHCH), where it too saw protests from the citizenship as well as parents and students from the CENHCH. The project was then moved to its current location in the commercial zone Angelopólis. Its construction was firstly received with dissatisfaction, as the observation wheel caused constant blackouts to the population near the project due to the electrical power needed to install the wheel. In June 2013, the wheel was officially named Estrella de Puebla and was inaugurated on July 22, 2013. Characteristics The Estrella de Puebla is an R80XL-type Ferris wheel from the German company Maurer Wheels GmbH. Its height is approximately 80 meters, containing 54 gondolas with a capacity of eight persons each. Four of those gondolas are considered luxury gondolas, which contain glass floors and leather seats. The observation wheel makes approximately three complete turns every hour. The Ferris wheel is portable, meaning that it can be completely armed and disarmed without changing its structure, with the possibility of fitting in a regular container of 40×20 feet. The wheel also does not require foundations to be installed. Controversies The Estrella de Puebla has been harshly criticized for its cost, which goes to 200 million Mexican pesos for the purchase of the wheel and 200 million pesos for the zone adjustments. It has also received remarks for its secrecy, as the government has not answered requests for public information, being this information considered of a nature reserved for administration. For seven years, the local government has disclosed the cost and contract of the Ferris wheel. The Estrella de Puebla suffered a failure a week after being opened, on July 29, 2013. The government attributed the failure to the braking system. The accident forced the authorities to evacuate passengers on the Ferris wheel and to close temporarily the tourist attraction. In September 2015, it was announced that the Estrella de Puebla had spent 2. 75 million pesos on electricity during its two years of operation. Economic Impact There are no exact numbers on the economic expense of the Estrella de Puebla. According to Alejandro Castañedo, Secretary of Tourism of the City Hall of Puebla, in July 2015 it was unknown the number of people (nationals and foreign) that had access to the Ferris wheel. As of that date, the Estrella de Puebla was the fifth most visited tourist attraction in the state of Puebla, after Puebla Cathedral, the Chapel of the Rosario, the Señor de las Maravillas in the Santa Monica Temple, and Africam Safari zoo. In September 2015, the Secretary of Tourism of the State of Puebla, Ángel Trawitz, indicated that the Estrella de Puebla increased the visits to neighboring restaurants by 40% and called it a “tourist reference”. Trawitz pointed out that the number of daily visitors to the Ferris wheel is unknown, which was estimated by journalistic research from a local newspaper as of 300 daily visitors. This number is about 85% less than the daily visitor average published by the state government during the first five months of the Ferris wheel’s operation (2,300 per day).

During the colonial era, Puebla was one of the most important cities in New Spain and the entire continent. Puebla still has many examples of architecture with their own story. The Ovando Bridge is a small bridge, located in the Analco neighborhood. This stone bridge was built around 1775, to replace the old Analco Bridge that was used to connect the Spanish settlements with the downtown area of Puebla. It was one of the main bridges standing at the time (there were around 15). To gather the money for its construction, a special bullfight was organized. This kind of event was popular at that time and people gathered at the Zocalo downtown. The Ovando bridge was located immediately to the house of the councilor Agustín de Ovando y Villavicencio, ergo his name. Today the Ovando Bridge is one of the icons of Puebla. The place is full of tradition, culture, gastronomy, and crafts. A comfortable place for a morning walk. However, the Ovando Bridge is also one of the structures in Puebla that is surrounded by legend. In this case, there is a story completely separate from the facts, but it is still very interesting to know. It is a love story, similar to William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, where there is simply impossible love. The legend of the Ovando Bridge Legend has it that the Ovando family, one of the wealthiest in Puebla, had the Ovando Bridge built. Thus, they could link their luxurious home with the rest of the city by crossing over the San Francisco River. Supposedly, the patriarch of the family had two children: a strong young man and a young, beautiful 16-year-old daughter, who fell in love with a middle-class young man. It was a time when the family name of ancestry and maintaining prestige were everything for wealthy families. Disconsolate at the attitude of her father, the young woman cried for the love she felt towards the young man from Puebla and thought about how to remedy the situation. She thought that if she lost her virginity, her father would have no choice but to accept this loving union. However, on the day this event occurred, her brother caught them in the act. Enraged, he drew his pistol and tried to shoot the young man, only for her to step in his way, taking the bullet. Trying to avenge his beloved, the middle-class youth tried to reach for her sword. But, the brother was faster and cut the throat of his rival with a knife. The brother was not prosecuted or sent to jail because he committed an “honor killing.” That did not prevent his death, because a short time later he was found lying in an alley. It is said that the father, due to both tragedies, gave himself up to drink. One day, at dawn, he went to the Ovando Bridge and there a woman approached him. She turned out to be the spirit of her daughter, which scared him and he tried to run away. Horrified, the nobleman Ovando tried to escape, repeatedly denying himself what he had just seen, but an inexplicable flood of the river trapped him and his body was found dead several days later. Much time later, it was still said among the locals that this same silhouette would walk through the Ovando Bridge at midnight and if one gave alms, they could pass freely; but if not, the same end of the patriarch ran. It is said that the spirit of a woman still can be seen on the bridge. Or, at least, that’s what the legend says.

Environment Most of the municipality has been deforested, including the lower parts of the Malinche volcano and the entire Sierra de Amozoc, due to logging and seasonal agriculture. The Sierra del Tentzon and the higher elevations of the Malinche volcano still preserve the Mexican Trans-Volcanic Belt of pine-oak, an ecoregion of forests of pine, oak, and other species. In pine forests, Montezuma pine (Pinus Montezumae) is predominant, with Hartweg pine (Pinus Hartwegii), Teocote pine in dry areas with shallow soils, and fir-tree in various forests together with oyamel (Abies religious). The fauna consists mainly of small mammals such as rabbits and skunks, as well as birds such as owls, vultures, and wild waterfowl. Parks and green areas within Puebla City Metropolitan Eco-park of the City of Puebla: This park is a giant ecological and tourist recreation proposal and also, together with the Amalucan Park, they are the only two eco-parks in Puebla that welcome pets with pleasure. Park is located in the Angelópolis Zone of the city that is directly connected to the Paseo del Río Atoyac. Parque Jardín del Arte: Park located in the Angelópolis Zone that is part of the “Linear Park”; a network of bicycle lanes that connects the park-garden of art with the Metropolitan Auditorium, with the Estrella de Puebla, with the CIS (Comprehensive Service Center), with 2.5km of bicycle lanes connected to the Metropolitan Ecopark. The Mexican Revolution Ecological Park: It was opened in order to protect, conserve and improve the natural areas of the state and to provide the people of Puebla with spaces for culture, education, sports, and recreation, the Mexican Revolution Ecological Park was set up with 58 hectares. At the beginning of 2015, this park was modernized, which has an influx of one million visitors per year. Previously it was an airfield. Along with the natural spaces, the local fauna has also been seriously affected by the growth of the city. On the other hand, synanthropic species, which adapt to or even benefit from human presence, have thrived in the area; among them, the black rat (Rattus rattus), the red-bellied squirrel (Sciurus Aureogaster), the cacomixtle (Bassariscus astutus), the opossum (Didelphis virginiana), the rock pigeon (Columba livia), the house sparrow (Passer domesticus) and the carrot (Quiscalus Mexicanus).
