Estrella de Puebla (“Star of Puebla”) is a touristic Ferris wheel located in Puebla. It was opened on July 22, 2013, by governor Rafael Moreno Valle Rosas. The wheel received the Guinness Record for the world’s largest portable observation wheel, with a diameter of 69.8 meters and a height of 80 meters. The Estrella de Puebla is part of a touristic complex that includes the Parque Lineal, Jardín del Arte, Ecoparque Metropolitano, Paseo del Río Atoyac, as well as the International Museum of the Baroque. Governor Miguel Barbosa Huerta stated that the idea of retiring the Estrella de Puebla has not been dismissed, as it is “Moreno Valle’s insignia of waste”. However, local media has demonstrated that the attraction is economically self-sustaining. In January 2013, it was announced that governor Rafael Moreno Valle was evaluating the possibility of installing an observation wheel in Puebla, as part of the celebrations for the 151st-year anniversary of the Battle of Puebla. Later that month, it was confirmed that the government acquired an R80XL Ferris wheel from the German company Maurer German Wheels GmbH at the price of 200 million Mexican pesos. The original project consisted of the installation of the wheel at the Paseo Bravo historical zone, but it was opposed by INAH scholars and researchers. The project was moved to the Centro Escolar Niños Héroes de Chapultepec (CENHCH), where it too saw protests from the citizenship as well as parents and students from the CENHCH. The project was then moved to its current location in the commercial zone Angelopólis. Its construction was firstly received with dissatisfaction, as the observation wheel caused constant blackouts to the population near the project due to the electrical power needed to install the wheel. In June 2013, the wheel was officially named Estrella de Puebla and was inaugurated on July 22, 2013. Characteristics The Estrella de Puebla is an R80XL-type Ferris wheel from the German company Maurer Wheels GmbH. Its height is approximately 80 meters, containing 54 gondolas with a capacity of eight persons each. Four of those gondolas are considered luxury gondolas, which contain glass floors and leather seats. The observation wheel makes approximately three complete turns every hour. The Ferris wheel is portable, meaning that it can be completely armed and disarmed without changing its structure, with the possibility of fitting in a regular container of 40×20 feet. The wheel also does not require foundations to be installed. Controversies The Estrella de Puebla has been harshly criticized for its cost, which goes to 200 million Mexican pesos for the purchase of the wheel and 200 million pesos for the zone adjustments. It has also received remarks for its secrecy, as the government has not answered requests for public information, being this information considered of a nature reserved for administration. For seven years, the local government has disclosed the cost and contract of the Ferris wheel. The Estrella de Puebla suffered a failure a week after being opened, on July 29, 2013. The government attributed the failure to the braking system. The accident forced the authorities to evacuate passengers on the Ferris wheel and to close temporarily the tourist attraction. In September 2015, it was announced that the Estrella de Puebla had spent 2. 75 million pesos on electricity during its two years of operation. Economic Impact There are no exact numbers on the economic expense of the Estrella de Puebla. According to Alejandro Castañedo, Secretary of Tourism of the City Hall of Puebla, in July 2015 it was unknown the number of people (nationals and foreign) that had access to the Ferris wheel. As of that date, the Estrella de Puebla was the fifth most visited tourist attraction in the state of Puebla, after Puebla Cathedral, the Chapel of the Rosario, the Señor de las Maravillas in the Santa Monica Temple, and Africam Safari zoo. In September 2015, the Secretary of Tourism of the State of Puebla, Ángel Trawitz, indicated that the Estrella de Puebla increased the visits to neighboring restaurants by 40% and called it a “tourist reference”. Trawitz pointed out that the number of daily visitors to the Ferris wheel is unknown, which was estimated by journalistic research from a local newspaper as of 300 daily visitors. This number is about 85% less than the daily visitor average published by the state government during the first five months of the Ferris wheel’s operation (2,300 per day).

Its fifty-block historic center has been a UNESCO World Heritage site for the past twenty-five years, a testament to the plethora of colonial buildings, many tiled, all colorful, lining the streets. Cathedral of Puebla Meandering through the streets of the historic center offers visitors an excellent means of seeing the city. Though it seems as if there is a colonial church on every block, you will want to visit the Cathedral of Puebla, impossible to miss with its twin towers (tallest in Mexico) and just off the town’s main square. Begun in 1575, it was completed in 1664 and represents the pinnacle of New Spain Baroque architecture. Inside the main altar is ringed with smaller chapels, each exquisite in their own way, and many paintings original to the era. As beautiful and ornate as the cathedrals of Europe. Chapel of the Rosary The Chapel of the Rosary was finished in 1690 and is located inside the Church of Santo Domingo, a few blocks from the cathedral. It simply will take your breath away when you see the gold leaf and white interior of the chapel whose ornately plaster sculpted decorations are described as Churrigueresque, a style of the Spanish Baroque. Pictures do not do the chapel justice. The oldest library in the Americas Puebla is home to the oldest original library in the Americas, the Palafoxian Library. Named after the bishop who donated his private library of 5,000 books to Puebla in 1646, this library of 40,000 has remained in the same location since that time. Shelves from the 18th century have been beautifully restored as has the room, making it possible for visitors to imagine scholars of centuries past studying at the same tables. The library is on the second floor of Puebla’s Casa de la Cultura near the cathedral. Cholula A pre-Hispanic town west of Puebla, Cholula offers many interesting sights for visitors, most especially a chance to see one of the world’s largest pyramids. Alas, from afar it looks like a big hill, having been overgrown for centuries. Archeologists have done extensive exploration within the pyramid so that the non-claustrophobic can go inside; outside excavation has been hampered because the Spanish built a church on top of the pyramid, itself a cultural treasure worth seeing. One reason Cholula has so many churches is that the Spanish built a church on top of any pre-Hispanic religious site. Archeologists believe that the Great Pyramid was built in four stages from the 3rd Century BCE to the 9th Century CE and was dedicated to Quetzalcoatl. Archeological sites like Cantona Imagine a pre-Hispanic town where 80,000 Toltec Indians lived between 600 and 1000 CE. When you stand on a hill at Cantona, an archeological site two hours north of Puebla, you will be looking at what is believed to be the largest pre-Hispanic urban center in Mesoamerica. Following a two million dollar excavation in the mid-nineties, Cantona established itself as one of Mexico’s most important finds. The stone streets go on seemingly forever, in surprisingly good shape considering their age and the fact that builders did not use mortar. Candy Alley No visit to Puebla would be complete without a stroll down Candy Alley, a two-block stretch of Avenida 6 Oriente near the Chapel of the Rosary filled with candy shops. Colorful displays of Mexican and Puebla confections fill shop windows one after another, offering the perfect opportunity to learn about another of Puebla’s culinary delights.

Soon after its foundation, Puebla was well known for its fine ceramics, especially for the style that would be called Talavera. This has been due to the abundance of quality clay in the region, drawing some of the best artisans. Between 1550 and 1570, Spanish potters from Talavera de la Reina in Spain came to Puebla to teach the locals European techniques of using the potter’s wheel and tin-glazing. These new methods were mixed with native designs to give rise to what became known as Poblano Talavera. The glazing technique was first used for the tiles that still decorate many of the buildings in this city. Later, it was used to make pots, plates, jars, religious figures, and other items. By the mid-17th century, the industry here had become well-established. Guilds were formed and ordinances passed to ensure quality. Blue was used only on the most expensive pieces due to the cost of the mineral used to produce it. The period between 1650 and 1750 was known as the Golden Age. In 1813, the constitution eradicated the potter’s guild and revoked the ordinances established in 1653 to standardize production. Now anybody could use this ceramic method in any style they wanted, and the lack of regulations led to a decline in technique and artistic quality. The Talavera market crashed. Out of the 46 workshops in production since the 18th century, only seven remained. When Enrique Luis Ventosa, a 29-year-old Catalan, arrived in Puebla in 1897, there were just six workshops left. Ventosa was fascinated by the history and fine craftwork that had distinguished Puebla from the rest of Mexico. He became the leading force behind a renaissance in Talavera ware. Another impetus to the rebirth of the Puebla tile was that collectors found out about it. In 1904 an American named Emily Johnston de Forest traveled to Mexico with her husband and discovered Talavera. She established contact with scholars, collectors, and dealers who assisted her in building her collection. Eventually, her collection was given to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Other museums, like the Philadelphia Museum of Art, built their own collections. The Franz Mayer Museum in Mexico City has the largest collection of 726 pieces.

Palacio Municipal (Municipal Palace) Its construction ends in 1906, the façade is made of gray quarry stone in Renaissance style. In the interior, there is a patio with an exquisite marble stairway, as well as beauty salons and stained glass windows. The Church of Santo Domingo It was built in 1571. The temple is a stunning example of the Baroque style, and is famous for the resplendent Rosary Chapel, with 22-karat gold decoration, one of the city’s jewels. Ornate sculptures, masterful paintings, and extravagant gold leaves cover every inch of the walls and ceiling of the chapel, creating a dazzling effect. The chapel is sometimes referred to as “the golden house” or “the eighth wonder of the world”. Casa de Los Muñecos (House of the Dolls) An 18th Century building with one of the most beautiful façades in the city. It is so named because the building’s façade is decorated by 16 panels with Talavera that include semi-naked figures that appear to be like dolls. Inside, the University Museum exhibits more than 200 colonial paintings, and it also houses an elegant restaurant. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 hrs. Church of San Francisco. Shrine of San Sebastian It was built in the 16th century. It features an incredible orange-red tile facade. In the sideway of the church is the San Francisco Rode, with a number of restaurants where you can enjoy the traditional “chalupas”. Nearby it is interesting to visit the ancient Almoloya public washing area. Ex Convento de Santa Rosa The convent was built in 1739 and since 1973 it was transformed into a cultural center. In 1869, it ceased being a convent and became a psychiatric hospital. In the 20th century, the Ceramic Museum was founded in the building’s kitchen. This is where the story of the invention of mole poblano takes place. The facility exhibits local costumes and handicrafts and offers shows and art classes. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00. La Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción (Cathedral) The massive cathedral has Renaissance architecture and was built in different periods since 1575. No less impressive is the interior, decorated with beautiful masterpieces. The Cathedral has two organs donated by Carlos V. Los Portales (The Gates) This is a place full of history surrounded by buildings from the colonial period, where you can enjoy the typical dishes in one of the many restaurants located at the gates. Monastery of Santa Catalina de Siena It was built in 1556 and is considered the oldest in the city. With a simple façade, its interior displays beautiful baroque altarpieces. Casa del Alfeñique This 18th-century building houses the Regional Museum of Puebla with a display of 16th Century Mexican Indian codices, Spanish armors, blueprints, photographs, paintings, carriages, and a collection of antique dresses. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 hrs Sunday, free entrance. Ex Convento de Santa Mónica, Museo de Arte Religioso (Ex Convent of Santa Monica, Museum of Religious Art) In this convent, the nuns created the famous “Chiles en Nogada”, as a tribute to Agustin de Iturbide when he came back to Puebla after signing the declaration of Independence of Mexico, so they prepared this dish with the colors of the Mexican flag: green of the pepper, white of the Nogada and red of the pomegranate. Today the convent houses the Museum of Religious Art with more than 3,500 pieces of sacred art from the 16th to 19th centuries, one of the largest collections of religious art in Mexico. It has 27 rooms that explain the origins of the site, the history of Puebla since the sixteenth century, the process of evangelization, and the everyday life of the convent. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00. School of Talavera Poblana, “Patio de los Azulejos” It was built around 1677. This is a place where you can see the Talavera making process, top-quality hand-painted ceramics with artistic designs for tiles and bases.
