In 1862, the French army, considered the most bloodthirsty and ambitious of that time, was defeated on May 5 in Puebla by a small Mexican militia. This date was preserved in memory as a symbol of the Mexicans’ resistance to foreign invasion. But what happened and how did the Mexican army manage to stop the invaders? For 154 years, no one imagined that the answer was under the feet of the inhabitants of Puebla City, only at a depth of five meters. We’re talking about a system of tunnels that all have heard of, but which have been recently discovered and saved so that anyone can visit them. These tunnels may have been used by the Mexicans to be able to enter and exit through different points of Puebla City and thus ambush the French invaders. But in this whole story, there are still unfinished ends that need to be tied up, for example: why there are no official documents that talk about these tunnels? Was this really the best-kept secret of the government of President Benito Juarez? Sergio Vergara Berdejo, head of the Puebla Historic Center Authority, notes that the tunnels use construction methods from the 18th and 19th centuries, a century before the conflict between France and Mexico. This makes us think that the Mexican army of that time was one of the few who knew about the existence of these tunnels and even perhaps that they were the ones who expanded them, but then, who built them and why? Many Mexican cities have legends about secret tunnels lying just beneath the streets, used during the revolution either by royalty or even during the inquisition. Grandparents would tell these folk stories to children. The discovery of the Puebla tunnel in 2015 lends some credence to these urban legends. In the alley of Cinco de Mayo Road, there’s a doorway leading underground that looks to be an entrance to a subway. This is a tiny entrance discovered in 2015 – a secret tunnel system used to connect a fort area with the city of Puebla. After the discovery of the first door to the tunnels, due to uneven work, exploration of the underground network began along with the removal of earth and dirt, and the discovery of bullets and wooden crossbows along the way, which reinforces the hypothesis that the space was used for strategic and military purposes. A 500-year-old series of tunnels long believed to be folkloric was uncovered beneath the streets of Puebla City. The tunnel system is believed to extend for more than 10 kilometers. The entrances to four tunnels have been discovered during routine work in 2015 in the Historic Center of Puebla. Lined with stone, the tunnels reach a height of seven meters and a width of three and a half. The underground tunnel system dates back to 1531, they have resisted the passage of time, the weight of an ever-growing city, and a severe flood in the 1600s. That flood buried a good part of the then-young city — Puebla was founded in 1531 — because it proved easier for its denizens to build over the tonnes of mud than to dig out their original buildings. So parts of the city and its mythical tunnels were lost and forgotten. At first, it was thought that what had been uncovered was a sewage system, but after further excavations, it was found out these tunnels provided colonial officials and religious authorities with covert means of moving between convents, churches, and administrative offices. Tunnels, tall enough that a person could comfortably ride through on horseback, originate in the historic center of Puebla and lets out to the Loreto fort, where the Cinco de Mayo battle occurred. Along with toys, marbles, and antique kitchen goods, a lot of guns, bullets, and gunpowder were found trapped in the mud. The weaponry was mostly from the mid-19th century, around the time of the Battle of Puebla conflict between Mexico and France. Investigators believe these tunnels may have been used by soldiers during the war of Mexican liberation, though they also could have been used by clergy or even common folk. In addition to rumors among the population of Puebla about the existence of tunnels under the city, a 1929 publication described what people called the “Devil’s Cave” behind the building that occupied the vocational school, which seemed to be the beginning of a hole in which thieves left stolen large objects. After the tunnels have been rescued and illuminated, those who wish can visit them. Tunnels were opened to the public in 2016. The tour across the tunnel includes a guided visit by archaeologists who worked on the project and displays where one can see the items that lay in the mud for so long. Cuexcomate Geyser is a unique natural wonder located in the city of Puebla, Mexico. The Cuexcomate crater is an empty cone of an extinct geyser. The sinter cone of this inactive geyser, built around its opening, is 13 meters high and 23 meters in diameter. The central crater inside the cone is up to 8 meters wide and 17 meters deep (4 meters below ground level). The geyser attracts tourists interested in geology and natural attractions. Cuexcomate is mistakenly called the smallest volcano in the world. But despite its diminutive size, Cuexcomate has significant geological and cultural significance in the region. Visitors can climb a spiral staircase built inside the crater to reach an observation deck at the top, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the city of Puebla. The place is also surrounded by lush vegetation, which adds to its picturesque charm. Although Cuexcomate is not an active geyser in the traditional sense, its unique geological origin and accessible location make it an attractive stop for travelers exploring the volcanic history and natural beauty of the region. The site is part of a wider volcanic landscape that largely defines the geography and cultural heritage of central Mexico. The formation of Cuexcomate is associated with volcanic activity that characterizes the area around Puebla. It is classified as a maar, a type of volcanic crater formed by a phreatomagmatic eruption caused by the interaction of magma with groundwater. Over time, the eruption created a small, shallow crater that has remained dormant ever since. The last eruption of the geyser was in 1562, although it only spewed gases and boiling water, its structure is more similar to that of a volcano. Inwardly, it continues to be connected to Popocatepetl, which is why it could launch water again. The word Cuexcomate comes from the Nahuatl language and means “place to keep” or “warehouse”. In prehispanic times, the Cuexcomate Geyser was used to store meals and dispose of dead bodies. It was said that in ancient times, the people of Puebla threw the bodies of suicide victims into the crater because they did not deserve to be mourned or buried. The people living around the geyser were called ‘children of the devil’ or ‘under the devil’s rule’. During the New Spain period, it was the place of reception for sinners, inside it the suicides were thrown since they were not worthy of the requiem for their souls nor did they take place in the holy field. A description of Cuexcomate from the year 1585 says: “..at one league from this city, there is in a large grassland… in a circular shape, a rock of 6 or 7 estados high, at the top of which there is a great mouth as if it were made to hold a waterwheel. The which is very deep, and at the bottom of which there is foul-smelling water. There they say that in the heathen days, they threw in natives to be sacrificed to their idols” Later it was transformed into a garbage dump, people threw their waste inside and it was about to be covered. Currently, it is possible to enter through the crater, where there are spiral-shaped stairs that allow one to descend to the interior of the crater, into the excavated interior of the structure, where cultural events are occasionally performed. Visitors can descend to the interior of the Cuexcomete crater from 10:00 to 18:00. At the bottom, there is sulfurous water that rises from the caves, which has not been studied. Legends say one of the underground Puebla City’s tunnels runs from the hill of Loreto to the hill of San Juan (now the hill of La Paz) and from there to the Cuexcomate Geyser, then crosses under the Atoyac River and continues to the Pyramide of Cholula. Cuexcomate formed in what would later become the town of La Libertad and in 1943 it became part of the city of Puebla. On November 27, 1970, a plaque was placed around the sides of the Cuexcomate Geyser to commemorate the founding of La Libertad. The geyser is located in the square of the same name.

The National Museum of the Mexican Railways (MNFM) is an exhibition space dedicated to studying, preserving, and disseminating the railway legacy based on historical reviews of the railway, from its beginnings in 1988 to the present. This museum is located in the Historic Center of Puebla City. The museum has a significant number of historical railway objects, pieces that were not only part of the rolling stock, which is imposing and majestic, but also objects from everyday life used in offices, workshops, and patios of the now-defunct railway company. There are also recreational spaces and huge green areas to the delight of children and adults. Here are authentic railway cars that were used in different eras, including a presidential car and old steam engines. The museum has several halls, in which various exhibitions are temporarily presented, all related to the railway culture. Generally, the different collections contained therein are shown through a micrographic script, such as maps or plans of stations, routes or railway tracks, photographs, historical archives, and specialized books on the railway subject. In the 1970s, the National Railways of Mexico (FNM) company considered the creation of a Transport Museum whose purpose was to safeguard the historical and cultural heritage of Mexican railways. This project materialized on May 5, 1988, when President Miguel de la Madrid Hurtado inaugurated the National Museum of the Mexican Railways. This museum was located on the land previously occupied by the stations, yards, and workshops of the Mexican Railway and the Mexican Railway of the Sur, which in turn formed part of the enormous railway complex that developed in Puebla City. This place was extended over an area of approximately thirty blocks in which the Interoceanic Railway, the Puebla industrial Tramway, and the city’s urban Tramway Puebla, laid their tracks and established their stations. The Mexican Railroad route was the first to be built in our country, it went from Mexico City to the port of Veracruz, with a branch from Apizaco to Puebla whose extension was 47 kilometers. The Puebla station of the Mexican Railroad was inaugurated on September 16, 1869, by the then president of the republic, Benito Juárez. Between 1993 and 1994 the company FNM, through the MNFM, carried out the General Census of FNM Stations with the aim of creating a record that would allow the recognition of all railway stations for their subsequent restoration or reuse. In 1995, before the imminent privatization of the Mexican railway system, FNM proposed to carry out the National Program for the Rescue of the Historical, Cultural and Artistic Patrimony of FNM (PRONARE) whose organization and operation was left in charge of the MNFM, with the purpose of locating, registering and collect the documentary, graphic and printed goods generated by and for the company, as well as the tractive equipment and tools used in its operation. With the results of PRONARE, the collections that today constitute the Railway Documentation and Research Center were formed and enriched, A site that was built in the second section of the Museum, became the most important repository in Mexico in terms of railways because in it are gathered, protected and studied documents, graphics and printed matter from the mid-19th century and the 20th century.

Puebla is a unique city with a rich cultural heritage and interesting history. Located on the east side of two volcanoes, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl, and a short two-hour drive from Mexico City, you’ll find Puebla, Mexico’s fourth-largest city. Puebla is one of our favorite cities in Mexico for many reasons, vibrant colorful streets, Baroque architecture, and the beauty of the Zocalo come to mind, but the mouthwatering Poblano cuisine is at the top of the list. Puebla is the fourth largest city in Mexico. It has a metro population of more than 2.5 million. Puebla City is officially called Puebla de Zaragoza, after the general who won the Cinco de Mayo Battle. However, most people call it Puebla de Los Angeles (its original name based on a legend), and some even Angelopolis. The German brand Volkswagen operated its second-largest (outside Germany) manufacturing facility in Puebla for many years. Cuexcomate geyser located in the city of Puebla is considered the world’s smallest volcano. Poblanos are known for their accents. Some say they started to speak rhythmical Spanish when they used to mock the accent of the French (which attacked and ruled Mexico for some time). The historic center of Puebla City was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Center in 1987 and over 5,000 buildings were included in the catalog. UNESCO also recognizes the Biblioteca Palafoxiana (in the Historic Center) as the first public library in the Americas. Because of this fact, it has been declared a Memory of the World. But don’t think Puebla is a city stuck in the past. The city has many modern museums, a planetarium, glamorous shopping centers, and a beautiful convention center. The bell towers of Puebla’s Cathedral are the tallest in Mexico (70 meters). Many sources consider the “mole poblano” Mexico’s national dish. Puebla is also famous for other dishes such as “chiles en nogada” and “cemitas”. The vibe of Puebla cannot be absorbed by visiting as a day trip from Mexico City (a very popular thing to do). There are just too many sights to see, too many dishes to try and too many legends to hear. Puebla City is only second to Mexico City in a number of universities. That gives the city vibrancy, youthfulness, and tons of taquerias open till dawn hours. The city has its own mural “barrio” called Xanenetla. A ceramic style called Talavera (originated in Puebla) is admired worldwide. Tiles created using this style decorate many of the city’s buildings. Puebla is not only the name of a city but of an entire state which is bursting with waterfalls, archeological ruins, mountains, elaborate buildings, handicrafts, and indigenous groups. And of course, Puebla is known for the Battle of Puebla which took place May 5, 1862. This is not a mainstream celebration in Mexico (it is mostly celebrated in the city of Puebla and in the United States). Visit and explore Puebla City on your next Mexico trip!
