The Dean’s house is a historic building in the city of Puebla, which dates from the year 1563 but was occupied in 1580 (the date that is engraved on the lintel of the upper floor window). Its name comes from the position of its first owner and builder, Tomás de la Plaza y Goes, dean of the Puebla Cathedral. According to the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), an institution that protects and manages the building that is now a museum, the Dean’s house is “a magnificent example of what some of the mansions were in the first century of life of the City of Puebla. “The Dean’s house is considered the first civil construction in the city, and it has even been called” The Sistine Chapel of the New World”. Currently, only its Mannerist façade is preserved, hallway, entrance hall, patio, staircase, two rooms on the ground floor, and two on the upper floor. Facade of the Casa del Deán In the upper part of the facade, you can still see a date: 1580, which makes this house one of the oldest still preserved in the city. Inside there are unique murals from the 16th century that show the interest of its builder in the ideas of the Renaissance and that were saved from destruction between 1953 and 1954. Although unique 16th-century murals had been known to exist in this house since 1923, this was no reason to prevent the property from being sold in 1953 to build a cinema. Currently, inside the Dean’s house, it is possible to find two rooms adorned with murals made by indigenous Tlacuilos, mainly from the Mixtecos, Tlaxcalans, and Cholultecos. The first represents the sibyls, women who received from the god Apollo the gift of fortune-telling. The second is located in the bedroom of Don Tomás de la Plaza; it is called of the Triumphs. According to the inscription found in the second room, the murals were found by Efraín Castro Morales and David Bravo Cid on October 12, 1953 “under wallpaper and several layers of lime paint”. It is said that what saved these murals was their publication in the book Historia del Arte Hispanoamericano by Salvat, in Spain. The restoration was directed by Hermilo Jiménez, although there is doubt that strict criteria were followed. These paintings made under the direction of their owner, a cultured clergyman steeped in the Renaissance spirit, are one of the few examples of syncretic ornamentation in a building neither ecclesiastical nor conventual. But civil, although not public, where tradition Hellenic-Roman of the already Christianized sibyls and the one from the end of the Middle Ages, as seen in the Trionfi of Petrarca, joins with the autochthonous imagery originating the culture of New Spain. Still, you might be looking for a different experience, or maybe you just want to see all of the options before making a decision. All of the neighborhoods have their own unique personalities. So, check out this quick Puebla neighborhood guide to explore the four most popular places to stay in the city – the Center, Angelopolis, Cholula, and La Paz – and help you decide which one is right for you! Centro Historico The pro of staying in the Centro is that it’s incredibly walkable. You can access restaurants, bars, markets, parks, churches, and historical sites on foot and people are always out and about, so it has a lively atmosphere. The cons of the Centro are that it’s crowded and kind of dirty, just because there are so many people packed into a small space. The traffic can also be loud. If you’re only staying in Puebla for a few days, booking a hotel or Airbnb in the Centro Historico is the easiest way to see the major sites of the city. Angelopolis Angelopolis is the newest, cleanest, and most modern neighborhood in Puebla. It’s full of high-rise apartments and sprawling malls and fancy grocery stores. Angelopolis is outside of the city so you’ll need to take an Uber every time you want to go to the Center, and the neighborhood is made up of a lot of parking lots and highways and is not very walkable at all. If you’re going to Puebla City for business and don’t really want to site-see, then Angelopolis is a great place to stay, but if you want easy access to the pretty and interesting places that make Puebla so special. San Andres Cholula San Andres Cholula is a small town outside of Puebla. It’s home to the largest pyramid in the world (yep, you read that right) and has a large population of college students so it’s vibrant, artsy, and fun. The pro of staying in Cholula is that it’s a self-contained town with its own center, so you get restaurants, bars, and shops just like you’d find in Puebla but it’s cheaper, cleaner, less crowded, and more laid back. Cholula also has a surprisingly good food scene. The con of staying in Cholula is that you’ll be e a 20-minute Uber from the Puebla Centro and the rest of the city. If you don’t want to stay in the Centro Historico, Cholula is a great second choice as well because you’ll be right by the Cholula Pyramid (the most popular tourist attraction in the entire state) and still get to enjoy the food, shopping, and nightlife that this small town provides. La Paz Last up this ranking of the best places to stay in Puebla is the La Paz neighborhood. A lot of expats and young professionals live here. The pros of living in La Paz is that it’s quiet and in walking(ish) distance of downtown, so you can access the Centro pretty easily without having to stay among the noise and crowds full-time. The con of La Paz is that it’s super residential and there’s not that much going on. If you’re coming for a super long-term stay, La Paz’s quiet energy might appeal to you!

Conveniently located between Mexico City and Veracruz, Puebla can be reached by bus from Mexico City. Puebla revers its history as the first city built by Spaniards Spaniards in 1531. Its fifty-block historic center has been a UNESCO World Heritage site for the past twenty-five years, a testament to the plethora of colonial buildings, many tiled, all colorful, lining the streets. Cathedral of Puebla Meandering through the streets of the historic center offers visitors an excellent means of seeing the city. Though it seems as if there is a colonial church on every block, you will want to visit the Cathedral of Puebla, impossible to miss with its twin towers (tallest in Mexico) and just off the town’s main square. Begun in 1575, it was completed in 1664 and represents the pinnacle of New Spain Baroque architecture. Inside the main altar is ringed with smaller chapels, each exquisite in their own way, and many paintings original to the era. As beautiful and ornate as the cathedrals of Europe. Chapel of the Rosary The Chapel of the Rosary was finished in 1690 and is located inside the Church of Santo Domingo, a few blocks from the cathedral. It simply will take your breath away when you see the gold leaf and white interior of the chapel whose ornately plaster sculpted decorations are described as Churrigueresque, a style of the Spanish Baroque. Pictures do not do the chapel justice. The oldest library in the Americas Puebla is home to the oldest original library in the Americas, the Palafoxian Library. Named after the bishop who donated his private library of 5,000 books to Puebla in 1646, this library of 40,000 has remained in the same location since that time. Shelves from the 18th century have been beautifully restored as has the room, making it possible for visitors to imagine scholars of centuries past studying at the same tables. The library is on the second floor of Puebla’s Casa de la Cultura near the cathedral. Cholula A pre-Hispanic town west of Puebla, Cholula offers many interesting sights for visitors, most especially a chance to see one of the world’s largest pyramids. Alas, from afar it looks like a big hill, having been overgrown for centuries. Archeologists have done extensive exploration within the pyramid so that the non-claustrophobic can go inside; outside excavation has been hampered because the Spanish built a church on top of the pyramid, itself a cultural treasure worth seeing. One reason Cholula has so many churches is that the Spanish built a church on top of any pre-Hispanic religious site. Archeologists believe that the Great Pyramid was built in four stages from the 3rd Century BCE to the 9th Century CE and was dedicated to Quetzalcoatl. Archeological sites like Cantona Imagine a pre-Hispanic town where 80,000 Toltec Indians lived between 600 and 1000 CE. When you stand on a hill at Cantona, an archeological site two hours north of Puebla, you will be looking at what is believed to be the largest pre-Hispanic urban center in Mesoamerica. Following a two million dollar excavation in the mid-nineties, Cantona established itself as one of Mexico’s most important finds. The stone streets go on seemingly forever, in surprisingly good shape considering their age and the fact that builders did not use mortar. Candy Alley No visit to Puebla would be complete without a stroll down Candy Alley, a two-block stretch of Avenida 6 Oriente near the Chapel of the Rosary filled with candy shops.
